What is schema markup, and does a small business really need it?
Schema markup is a block of structured data on your pages that hands machines your facts — services, area, hours, FAQs — instead of hoping they guess right from your copy. Small businesses need it because answer engines lean on it when deciding what to quote, and most local competitors don't have it.

What does schema actually do?
It labels your content in a vocabulary machines already know — schema.org. Instead of an engine inferring from prose that you're a contractor who installs commercial HVAC, a Service block states it outright: name, service type, what's included. Inference can be wrong; a declaration can be trusted and reused.
It's invisible to visitors. Schema lives in the page's code as JSON-LD and changes nothing about the design.
Which schema types matter for a small business?
LocalBusiness or ProfessionalService — who you are, where you work, how to reach you.
Service — each core offering, with provider and area served.
FAQPage — your real customer questions, answered in full on the page.
Article — for guides: headline, author, dates published and modified.
Four types cover most service businesses. The rule that matters more than any type: the markup must match what's visibly on the page. Schema describes content — it never substitutes for it.
Is it worth the effort?
Yes, because the cost is low and the asymmetry is large. Adding schema is hours of work on most platforms, it never hurts, and it's one of the few AEO levers where small businesses are typically ahead of or even with much bigger competitors — because almost nobody local does it properly.
Frequently asked
Can I add schema without a developer?
Often. Many platforms have schema fields or plugins, and JSON-LD can be pasted into a page's head section. A developer helps when you want it generated automatically across many pages.
How do I check my schema is working?
Run the page through Google's Rich Results Test or the schema.org validator. Both show exactly what a machine parses from your page.
Will schema alone get me into AI answers?
No — it's one of the five structural pieces. Schema makes your facts unambiguous; the page still has to answer a real question directly.
