Why doesn't my website show up in AI answers?

The short answer

Your site probably doesn't show up in AI answers because it describes what you do instead of answering what people ask. Answer engines quote pages that state a clear question, give a direct answer in the first two sentences, and back it with structured data they can parse. Fix those three things and you become quotable.

What is an answer engine, exactly?

An answer engine is any system that reads the web and returns a synthesized answer instead of a list of links — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI overviews. The person asking never sees ten blue links. They see one paragraph, sometimes with two or three citations underneath. Being one of those citations is the whole game.

That changes what a good page looks like. Ranking third used to be fine. Now, if you're not the source the model pulls from, you're not in the conversation at all.

Why brochure copy never gets quoted

Most small business sites open with a claim: "quality craftsmanship since 1998." That's not an answer to anything. Nobody asks a machine "who has quality craftsmanship." They ask "how much does a kitchen remodel cost" or "how long does a custom build take."

If your site never states the question, there's nothing to match. And if the answer is buried in paragraph six between two photo galleries, a model has no reason to trust that it found the point.

Write the question your customer types. Then answer it in two sentences, before you sell anything.

What structure makes a page quotable?

Five things, in order of how much they matter:

01

One page, one question. Don't bundle six answers onto a services page.

02

The question as the H1, phrased the way a person says it out loud.

03

A direct answer inside the first 50 words. No warm-up paragraph.

04

Specifics a model can cite: numbers, timeframes, named steps, real constraints.

05

Structured data — FAQPage, Article, Service, LocalBusiness — so nothing is left to inference.

Frequently asked

How long before AEO changes show up in answers?

Usually two to eight weeks, depending on how often your site gets crawled. Structured data tends to get picked up faster than new content.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. It sits on top of it. Clean technical SEO is still what lets a crawler reach the page; AEO is what makes the page worth quoting once it gets there.

Can I do this on my existing website?

Often yes — restructuring copy and adding schema doesn't always require a rebuild. It depends on whether your platform lets you control page structure and markup.
